I didn’t listen.
I did it. I didn’t listen. Well, I listened but I didn’t change my actions to match the wisdom my body was trying to tell me.
I got “flashed” by the automatic speed camera on the freeway while I was driving to a group meditation. That’s just so embarrassing…I was speeding to a place where I could slow down and was caught being way not-in-the-moment! Yes, I’m an expert on intuition and still, it happened. What a lesson. I have to laugh. The message, perfectly clear, was being broadcast from my belly to my heart and head: “Slow down, you’re moving too fast.” But my head contradicted my deeper knowing and now I’ll have a picture to remind me how important it is to listen to the soft whisper of intuition.
This is a first for me. I’ve never been to traffic school or whatever you call that class we have to take. I’m sure I’ll be learning all about it soon…when whoever takes those pictures (Big Brother Is Watching) sends me instructions on what to do next.
Do you have any suggestions for surviving traffic school? Argh.
Where Is Community?
Community occurs in the space between people.
Community is not only the division of labor: “You do this task while I take care of that, and we’ll build a community.” Instead, an unseen “something” is born out of the silent agreement of mutual creativity – a palpable non-noun.
When Quakers, Friends, come together for a neighbors barn-raising, it is not necessarily important who makes lemonade and who saws the lumber. Community occurs in the infinity between beings – silence imbued with soul satisfying connective experiences.
Community is not solely defined by function or commonality, by the number of members or shared interests, but by mutual coherence across space and time.
When a writer participates in a reading/signing event or an artist appears at a reception on opening night at a gallery, resonance expands between writer and reader, between artist and those beholding the art. Fields of quiet respect expand; undefined trust moves through space connecting heart-minds in shared mutuality of individualized meaning.
Membership cards, secret handshakes, and the act of gathering in the same building on the same day every week – none of these things truly creates community. The mammal in our brain’s limbic system loves the camaraderie of the pack – humans like to “belong.” However, just belonging to a group, wearing the same T-shirt, rooting for the same team, belonging to the same organization, working for the same company, being part of the same family – none of these groupings automatically create “community.” Community arises from within meaningful silence between people. We often mistake tasks, activities and projects as the glue that holds community together. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
For example, I often hear the words “yoga community” spoken with a particular flair of pride or caring. So, what is an art community, yoga community, or farming community? It is not the conceptual label ART or YOGA or FARMING that carries actual defining aspects of community. Nor is community defined merely through final products such as paintings, asanas, or fruit stands. Communities are born out of the fields of goodwill flowing between consenting participants. Community is an evolving dream-desire arising from collective impulses expressed individually and promoted collectively within shared space which opens and dedicates itself for this purpose, such as the pages of this magazine or the whole of our planet.
“Community” is an invitation for cooperating, communicating and collaborating. It is not ultimately defined by procedures, laws, rules, tasks, production rates or outcomes, but by silent heart agreement allowing vulnerable play to arise, to pop spontaneously out of waves of possibility and express, even for a moment, something-which-wants-to-come.
Real “community” promotes human connection.
It lives through human desire for serviceable utility and purpose and thrives on our shared universal impulses of vitality and joy. Community awakens wherever we fully show up and share our heart.
